News & Views: The Artist’s Journey & Studio Progress

Welcome to News & Press —a space dedicated to documenting my creative progress, material breakthroughs, and studio announcements as an independent sculptor.

🎨 My Art Journey & Philosophy

For over two decades, sculpting was my quiet personal passion. While I have been creating handcrafted works for over 20 years as a hobbyist and executing custom commercial commissions for local buyers since 2019, I intentionally avoided traditional art galleries and public exhibitions. My focus has always been creating art for myself, local collectors, and custom commissions.

My public online journey began in 2025. Over years of hands-on experimentation, I developed specialized techniques in formulating and sculpting with non-kiln air-dry paper clay. These unique structural techniques allowed me to push paper clay far beyond its traditional boundaries.

🌿 Mission: Transforming Recycled Materials into Fine Art

My primary artistic goal is to promote the potential of recycled materials in our daily lives and share practical knowledge about sustainable art-making.

Many people view paper-mâché and paper clay as fragile or limited to small crafts. My work is dedicated to proving that recycled paper pulp—when properly formulated, structured, and sealed—is a powerful, durable medium for fine art and monumental sculpture.

By introducing new construction methods, temporary support techniques, and strength-enhancing formulas, I aim to inspire viewers and artists to rethink what recycled paper clay can achieve.

🏆 Landmark Milestone: World’s Largest Paper Clay Vase

This mission culminated in my landmark 6.9-foot-tall (2.1-meter) freestanding floor vase—the largest recorded standalone paper clay vase ever built. Hand-sculpted layer-by-layer in my Karachi studio, this piece serves as proof of concept for the structural strength, durability, and monumental potential of recycled paper clay.

Unique Paper Clay Formulation

The custom formulation I mix to achieve high structural strength and stability is the result of a lifelong journey of material experiments and research. This custom clay gives me the artistic freedom to shape and sculpt the material according to my exact vision. Depending on the piece, I adjust the formulation ratios—using heavier, denser mixes for strong base foundations, and more refined, flexible blends for intricate details, curves, and surface textures.

Unique Combination of Paper Mache & Epoxy Resin

While standard paper-mâché is naturally strong when dry, it suffers from heavy shrinkage during the drying process, which can distort delicate designs. Additionally, raw paper-mâché is sensitive to moisture and water damage. To overcome these traditional limits, I reinforce and seal my sculptures with a high-gloss epoxy resin coating. This not only makes the vessels water-resistant and structurally rigid, but also creates unique surface textures and rich visual depth reminiscent of high-fired glazed ceramics.

Making Unprecedented Paper Clay Art

While many artists work with paper-mâché, my focus is on pushing the boundaries of monumental scale. Most paper clay artists limit their work to smaller forms or pieces under 2 to 4 feet because traditional paper clay lacks the self-supporting rigidity required for large standalone structures. By combining my custom air-dry clay formulation with structural armatures and epoxy reinforcement, I make large-scale freestanding floor vases possible without relying on kiln firing or industrial molds.

Updates on New Projects

Building upon the success and engineering methods developed during the creation of the world’s largest paper clay floor vase, my next project will focus on an even taller, more complex sculptural vessel. I am currently gathering materials and refining the architectural design for this piece, and studio progress updates will be published here soon!

“From Another Planet is a series of sculptural floor vases made from air-dry paper clay and finished with epoxy resin for a glossy, glaze-like surface. The works explore how this paper-based material can take on the scale and presence of monumental sculpture.”
